A little preparation makes your first meeting far more productive. Bring what you can — don't worry about a perfect file.
01 Bring identification
- A photo ID
- Your contact details and preferred way to be reached
02 Key dates & background
- Date of marriage and, if applicable, date of separation
- Names and dates of birth of your children
- A short written summary of your situation and your goals
03 Court & case papers (if any)
- Any petitions, complaints, or motions you’ve received or filed
- Existing court orders (custody, support, protective orders)
- Any signed agreements (prenuptial, separation, parenting)
04 Financial snapshot
- Recent pay stubs or proof of income for both spouses, if available
- Recent tax returns
- A rough list of major assets (home, vehicles, retirement, accounts) and debts
- Monthly household expenses, roughly
05 For matters involving children
- Your children’s school and activity schedules
- The current parenting/time-sharing arrangement
- Any concerns about safety or well-being
06 Your questions
- Write down the questions that matter most to you
- Note your priorities — what a good outcome looks like for you
